She said she only used normal everyday ballpoint pens.
She used them by cross hatching.. what does cross hatching mean?

In simpler terms you shade or create an image by crisscrossing straight lines, overlapping them until you get the image you want. For example, you would have something that looks like this symbol # but with more lines on either side, over lapping, over and over. Hope this helps

This picture does not meet the normal definition of cross hatching which is drawing or graving parallel lines across each other with white space in between. She is not using the white spaces of crosshatching at all. She has simply gone over and over her colors in various directions. Notice that it took her 30 hours for an 8x9" image.

It's where you shade by using over-laping lines. I really enjoyed cross-hatching when my art teacher had my class do it for a few days. The picture is what I did for my high school art day. It's really fun and easy to do.
